Comprehensive Cancer Support Program
An Advisory Board member attends this meeting once a month and participates in group discussions regarding supportive services and ways to improve, expand, and enhance the work of the CCSP
In-Patient Education Committee
Reviews, edits, recommends changes, field test and approves the literature that various UNC Hospital Departments are requesting to become official documents for the hospital such as general instructions for patients and caregivers.
Board members interview patients/caregivers as they wait for their appointments to determine what the cancer hospital can do better, what we can do to support patients and caregivers, how long the wait time has been how the communication has been among their health care team, wait time, pressing problems and comments. The results of this survey are taken to the administration once a month for their perusal. It is a way to better communicate patient/caregiver needs outside of a mailed survey
In-patient Experience Team for UNC Healthcare
The purpose of this committee is determine and promote the betterment of in-patient services such as a beautician, foot and nail care, updating the patient information folder etc.
The new Hospital Ethics Grand Rounds series will offer an innovative and interactive forum for engaging with ethical, legal, and policy issues with highlights on patient care within the hospital. Sessions will include presentation in medical ethics, case conferences and “myth-busting” of common misperceptions related to law and policy. The series will focus on decision-making for both child and adult patients related to serious illness including end-of-life.
The planning committee will be responsible for the planning of the hospice facility, the number and type of beds, location, proformas, staffing etc. as well as working on the certificate of need for a Free-standing Inpatient Hospice and Palliative Care Units including residential beds.
Bringing Supportive Services information to BMT patients and caregivers
Twice a week, a welcome package is brought to newly admitted patients detailing what is available for supportive services for both patients and caregivers. Lisa meets with each new admission and goes over the list with them, often returning to the Resource Center for additional needs.
Carolina Care – UNC Health Care
The purpose of the committee is oversight of patient satisfaction on both inpatient units and clinics. The committee meets monthly. The voice and perspective of a patient is present at each meeting helping the committee ensure the patient is a the forefront of their work and interpreting what patients are telling us in surveys.
Ambulatory Patient Experience
The purpose of the group is to create a plan to improve the overall patient experience in ambulatory clinics using the Six Sigma approach.
UNC Hospitals Admissions Committee
The purpose of the committee is to improve our scores in the admission section of customer service survey.
Carolina Care – NC Cancer Hospital
Purpose of the committee is to determine ways to improve patient satisfaction scores throughout the hospital.
Steering committee meets once a month to determine how to roll out a caregiver initiative. All areas of the cancer hospital are represented on this committee and will begin with caregiver support groups over the holiday facilitated by a staff member. These will continue over the next few months, meeting twice a month.
Hillsborough Oncology Facility
Board members provided feedback and input into plans of the new oncology space.
Transitions Team- UNC Health Care
The purpose of the committee is to improve our scores in the admission section of customer service survey. The board member will look over our process and initiatives to see if they are accomplishing our mission from a patient perspective
Partnering with Patients and Families
This committee is to assist other areas of the cancer?hospital in partnering with patients/caregivers and family members to respond better to patient/caregiver concerns and needs. It includes developing by-laws, application forms, attributes of potentialpatient advisory/board member, how to conduct meetings and bring about a collaborative effort between staff and patients/caregivers.
To pursue the funding of a grant to establish an exercise program post treatment for prostate cancer. Meetings have been held with representation from UNC Lineberger Development department, urology, oncology, and exercise physiology
Patient Assistance Committee
This committee is an advisory board providing oversight of the management and disbursement of donated funds available to provide assistance to our patients and families in times of need. Membership of the committee represents all areas of the healthcare system.
Using iPads to determine perception of wait time in Infusion
A grant was received to purchase six iPads to be distributed in the waiting area of infusion. The iPads would have movies for viewing, information and resources as apps for patients to distract themselves during long waits. A survey is to be developed to determine if these items have helped distract patients from the perceived wait time.
New Patient Orientation
A committee comprised of representatives from throughout the cancer hospital to determine how best to orient new patients and their caregivers to the hospital complex,
Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Advisory Council
This committee meets monthly to assess needs of the pediatric population and works alongside staff to support patients and their families.
Board members have reviewed brochures, educational materials and signage and interviewed candidates for cancer hospital positions. They have served as spokespeople at community events, in the media, and with UNC faculty and students groups.
