Diane Meiburg

Each year Diane Meiburg makes an appointment at UNC for a mammogram and an MRI to monitor for breast cancer and makes a gift to UNC Lineberger.

Diane MeiburgShe says, “My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer 10 years ago, and my father with colon cancer 11 years ago. With my genetic history, when I was offered genetic testing at UNC, I was eager to have it.

“I see Cecile Skrzynia, my medical genetics counselor, and visit with nurse practitioner Judy Swasey. Judy takes time to talk with me and gives me encouraging and realistic counsel.”

Ms. Meiburg, a part-time speech therapist in Cary, explains, “Having the genetic testing was a wise decision, and it makes me feel better.”

Another wise decision, she feels, is making an annual gift to UNC Lineberger. With her unrestricted memorial gift, she supports cancer research.  “It’s important for all of us to give. It’s up to an individual to give back part of what they have be it financially or of their time.”

She has three grown children, two of whom are in college. “I want to set an example for my family by making an annual gift. If they see what I’m doing, then maybe they will give as well. It’s just a little bit of money or time, but it’s important.”

She offers this quote from her sister’s medical oncologist: “I am not going to be doing this the rest of my life. I want to find a cure.” Diane Meiburg shares his hope.
