Jimbo and Lorraine Harrell
Jimbo and Lorraine Harrell of Charlotte, N.C. joined the UNC Lineberger Board of Visitors in 2011 but they hit the ground running.
Jimbo says, “When I first toured the cancer center I was simply overwhelmed and impressed by the mission, the facilities, by UNC Lineberger’s accomplishments, by the resources they bring to the table in research, clinical trials, treatment and prevention, and through their collaborative strategy. Lorraine and I believe UNC Lineberger is the perfect team for us to rally our support around in the fight against cancer.”
Jimbo explains, “We want to reach out and develop relationships within our region to build support for the cutting edge research being performed at UNC Lineberger. We can help by being ambassadors and promoting awareness around the cancer center’s mission, and encourage participation in this area of North Carolina.”
They recently made a planned gift. Lorraine says, “Cancer has had an impact on our families. I lost both my parents to the disease.”
Jimbo adds, “Cancer is an intergenerational battle. With this planned gift to UNC Lineberger, we can signal to our family the importance of making a long term commitment.”
“At first it was a little intimidating, but the UNC Lineberger team helped make the planned giving process easy,” Jimbo says. “The paperwork provided to us was thorough and contained enough information to fully understand the process and how to introduce the proper language into our will. It allowed us to easily hand it off to our advisors and our attorney.”
The Harrells conclude, “We encourage people to seriously consider making a planned gift. The statistics tells us that cancer is going to affect one out of two men and one out of three women. If it hasn’t already impacted you and your family, your friends and neighbors, it likely will in the future. We are passionate about what UNC Lineberger is doing for the state of North Carolina. The best way to win this battle is to step up and join the effort.”
