Brenda Agner and Bowling for the Battle
Brenda Agner is known throughout theN.C.CancerHospitalfor both for her warm demeanor and the bottomless jar of candy on her desk, described by Brenda as “therapy for patients who need a pick-me-up and colleagues who are having a hard day.” Since beginning at UNC in 2007, Brenda has served in many areas of the UNC Health Care system, most recently assuming the position of Office Manager at UNC Hospice in Pittsboro.
While working in her previous position in the Hematology Oncology clinic, Brenda was approached by a patient, Michelle Pinkney, who wanted to show her gratitude for the supportive care she and her family received while undergoing treatment at the N.C. Cancer Hospital.
Inspired by Michelle’s personal story and her ongoing battle with cancer, Brenda devised the idea of having a friendly “Physician vs. Staff” bowling fundraiser. Several of her colleagues, Matt Revilla, Samara Dixon and Nora Christopher expressed their excitement on this great event and quickly joined in on the group effort to support UNC Lineberger, 1 in 9 and two N.C. Cancer Hospital patients.
“We thought that having a Bowling Tournament, where we bowl against each other would be an awesome public display of just how hard we fight for our patients, and with our patients,” explains Brenda.
“That is what I think makes cancer treatment at UNC so special,” Brenda continues. “When you have all the researchers, physicians, and staff fighting the fight alongside the patients, the sight and experience is incredible. It is imperative that they know how much we care for them and how hard we work for their remission.”
Brenda and her team invite you to join them at the Bowl-a-Thon on July 27, from 1 to 6 PM. The event – Bowling for the Battle: Striking Out Cancer will take place at ZBowl Family Entertainment Center (recently renamed Buffalo Lanes) – in Mebane and more details can be found on their Facebook page or on our event page here.
