Presented by Carolyn Sartor, MD, Oncologist, Survivor, Founder of New Life After Cancer and Loretta Muss, RN, Coordinator, Patient and Family Advisory Board, NC Cancer Hospital with support from UNC/Lineberger Cancer Center and UNC Wellness Center at Meadowmont, this series will provide the information and experience to making healthy meal choices. Pairing lectures with hands-on cooking, New Life After Cancer's cooking courses are a fun way to learn, reinforce healthy eating habits, and meet new friends.

Four courses include:

September 14, 2012 - "The Power of Pretty Colors”
Studies show that eating 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day is associated with reduced risk of breast cancer recurrence. Furthermore, some fruites and vegetables are even more effective than others. We will review which fruits and vegetables have the greatest activity against breast cancer and why. Then we’ll cook up some great vegetarian dishes.

October 12, 2012 “The Skinny on Fats”
Evidence suggests that weight control reduces breast cancer recurrence, so keeping tabs on the high-calorie fats is important. However, all fats are not equal. We will review“good” fats vs. “bad”. We’ll then cook and eat a fat-healthy meal.

November 9, 2012 “Sweet Nothings”
Evidence is accumulating that links the body’s glucose-insulin load with breast cancer. We will review the data related to sugar-loaded diets and breast cancer, and how to choose foods that reduce blood glucose peaks. Then we’ll use what we’ve learned to prepare a meal using less familiar grains and starches.

December 7, 2012 “The Spice of Life”
Certain spices have been used throughout human history as dietary-medicinal foods. We will discuss the anti-breast cancer activity of green tea, chocolate, red wine, and turmeric, to name a few. We have some interesting recipes to create unique dishes to cook up and enjoy.
