Community Lunch and Learn: Lecture on Cancer - What is immunotherapy and why is it so exciting for cancer treatment?

Please join the UNC Cancer Network for an online, interactive lecture with Thomas Shea, MD. Immunotherapy is treatment that relies on being able to recruit the body’s normal immune cells to kill cancer cells. In this talk, we will start to explain how recently approved drugs and treatment approaches are able to “wake-up” the immune system to identify and kill cancer cells even after the cancer becomes big enough to be a clinical problem. Community Lunch and Learn lectures are geared toward cancer patients, survivors, family, friends, and care givers/supports but anyone interested in learning more about cancer is welcome to join us. Every lecture has a question and answer section at the end so feel free to ask the presenter for clarification or more information. Lectures are viewable online via GoToWebinar or by participating in the lecture at one of our designated viewing sites. Please contact us for more information about GoToWebinar registration or to be connected with a site coordinator near you.

LECTURE DESCRIPTION

Immunotherapy is treatment that relies on being able to recruit the body’s normal immune cells to kill cancer cells. Under normal circumstances, the immune system helps to identify and kill cancer cells when they first start and before a cancer grows large enough to cause problems, just like the immune system helps to fight off infections before they make a person sick. Unfortunately, cancer cells have ways that they hide from immune cells and put those cells to sleep before the cancer cells can be killed. In this talk, we will start to explain how recently approved drugs and treatment approaches are able to “wake-up” the immune system to identify and kill cancer cells even after the cancer becomes big enough to be a clinical problem.
