About the Center and Its Programs

  • Established in 1975, the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is part of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.
  • Largest research entity at UNC with 250 faculty members from more than 25 different departments and disciplines.
  • The Center combats cancer from all directions by uniting faculty members from the five Health Affairs Schools – Medicine, Public Health, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy, - as well as faculty throughout the College of Arts and Sciences and other professional schools.

Clinical Services:

  • UNC Lineberger physicians treat patients from every county in North Carolina with the highest quality and most compassionate care. The Center provides multidisciplinary programs for most cancers, giving patients the benefit of many medical specialists in one place, often in one visit.
  • UNC Lineberger offer unique treatment innovations for the toughest cases through clinical trials – from novel cancer vaccines and drugs to new ways of enhancing current chemotherapy - developed at UNC or available through affiliation with national clinical trials groups.
  • The Center uses the latest technology to diagnose and treat cancer and offers genetic counseling and testing for some cancers.
  • Multidisciplinary programs include LINK the UNC Breast Center Thoracic Oncology Program (lung cancer), GYN Oncology, Pediatrics, GI Tumor, Neuro-Oncology, Hematologic Cancers- Leukemia/Lymphoma/Myeloma, Melanoma, Bone and Soft Tissue, Urology, and the Head & Neck Cancer Programs while the Cancer Genetics Program services individuals at increased risk for developing cancer.
  • The Center provides access to new cancer treatments through affiliation with national clinical trial groups and unique Center-sponsored therapies, as well as the Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplantation Program for adults and children.
  • UNC is applying the latest technology to cancer diagnosis and treatment, offering Intensity Modulated Radiation therapy (IMRT), Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT), advanced virtual and 3-D imaging for breast biopsies, PET scanner and laparoscopic and robotic surgeries for select surgeries.
  • The Patient/Family Resource Center and its associated programs provide all types of patient resources including computer access to current information as well as support groups and services.

Prevention and Control Programs, Laboratory Science and Training Opportunities:

  • The Center’s community directed programs for cancer prevention, early detection and cancer survivorship extend throughout North Carolina to reduce cancer incidence and mortality. UNC Lineberger programs in cancer epidemiology and cancer prevention and control, examine patterns of cancer in the community to understand the complex interaction among genetics, biology, environmental exposures and behaviors that cause cancer. Center faculty work in North Carolina communities to promote cancer screening services and encourage healthy lifestyles that can reduce cancer risk.
  • Projects such as N.C. Strides and Project BEAUTY work with individuals in the community, helping them make healthy changes in their lives and increase their use of cancer screening tests.
  • Carolina Community Network, funded by the National Cancer Institute, aims to reduce breast, prostate and colorectal cancers in adult African-Americans. The network will include cancer treatment centers, research components of UNC, community groups, and health promotion-oriented institutions and organizations.
  • Prostate Cancer Project scientists in North Carolina and Louisiana seek to understand why some men get more severe prostate cancer than others. This project is supported by prostate cancer survivors, community advocates, state cancer registries and the US Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program.
  • The Center’s internationally recognized research programs in Cancer Cell Biology, Immunology, Molecular Carcinogenesis, Cancer Genetics, Molecular Therapeutics, and Virology investigate the molecular and genetic basis of cancer and progression.
  • Center researchers are conducting molecular analysis of cancers to identify patients who can benefit significantly from treatment. Researchers are also identifying molecular targets for new therapies and are developing the methods necessary for genetic therapy.
  • Center-based training includes NCI-sponsored programs in basic laboratory science and cancer prevention and control. Other NCI training programs directed by Center members include cancer epidemiology, cancer education, hematology/oncology, and surgical oncology. Center members also direct training programs in gynecologic oncology and radiation oncology.
