Area of Interest
I am interested in the development and application of new imaging techniques to answer clinically relevant questions in both human and pre-clinical studies. In particular, I am interested in guiding advanced imaging techniques from pre-clinical applications into the clinic, focusing on cancer. My hope is to develop new methods to enhance our biomedical understanding and diagnostic capability of these diseases.
I have two major areas of research focused on cancer imaging and treatment.
First, I am responsible for the pre-clinical and clinical translation of the carbon nanotube (CNT) x-ray sources invented at UNC Chapel Hill by Drs. Otto Zhou and Jianping Lu. I am responsible for the human imaging applications in breast, chest and neurological imaging, and our clinical trials related to these devices. I also developed the small animal imaging approaches with the CNT x-rays, including micro-CT and the dynamic imaging techniques. Furthermore, I am actively involved with our micro-beam radiotherapy projects based on the CNT sources.
Second, I am interested in developing new advanced imaging for primary brain tumor and brain metastases using a combination of novel PET approaches and advanced MRI techniques. Specifically, I am interested in novel imaging PET imaging agents, and the development of blood-brain barrier permeability imaging for the prediction of tumor response and drug delivery. I use an integrated approach to develop techniques that may directly translate from mice to men.
I have had the fortune of working with nearly every major imaging modality, including x-ray and MRI (as above) ultrasound, ultrasound contrast agents, nuclear medicine, and electrical imaging. This offers me a unique perspective in performing translational imaging research, since I can draw on the strengths and weaknesses from every modality to answer relevant clinical questions.
