2nd Annual "Hats With Heart" Contest Winners Announced

Hats on display

56 hats were entered in the Second Annual "Hats with Heart" contest sponsored by The Patient & Family Resource Center and the Women's Health Information Center.

The” Hats With Heart” Contest is part of the Patient & Family Resource Center's Healing Hats program that was introduced in 2002 with the goal of having handmade hats available at no charge to UNC cancer patients.

All hats submitted to the contest were on display in the lobby of the NC Women's Hospital in October where employees, patients, and the public voted for their favorite hat with over 900 votes being cast.

The winners of the competition were honored during an awards ceremony on October 28th where Cathy Heaton of Durham, North Carolina was announced as the Best Overall Design Grand Prize Winner.


There were 5 hat categories judged and the other winners of the contest were:

  • The Elegant Lady: Ceresa Clarke of Chapel Hill, NC and Marianne Gemming-Jones, of Chapel Hill, NC
  • The Trendsetter: Janice McDonald of UNC Hospitals and Vicki Boyer of Carrboro, NC
  • The Classic: Martha Smith of Chapel Hill, NC and Cara Heaton of Durham, NC
  • Caps for Chaps: Christine Beeston, of Chapel Hill, NC, and Alexis Westbrook of UNC Hospitals;
  • The Popular Favorite: Velma Baker of Hart, Michigan, Linda Woodard of Chapel Hill, NC, and Helen Fredrick of Chapel Hill, NC.
