“Corona Cares” program to benefit N.C. Cancer Hospital Kicks Off August 1

by Mary Ruth last modified Aug 01, 2011 11:17 AM
RALEIGH, NC – Crown Imports announced today that the highly successful “Corona Cares” charitable donation program in North Carolina will kick off on August 1 to benefit patients and families at the N.C. Cancer Hospital.

The 2010 “Corona Cares” effort raised more than $91,500, all of which went directly to help patients and families facing the challenges of a cancer diagnosis and treatment.

“Many of our patients face extraordinary challenges due to their cancer, and we have a commitment to treat the whole person,” said Donald Rosenstein, MD, director of the UNC Comprehensive Cancer Support Program.

“This program, along with support from all of our generous donors, helps us provide a wide variety of services.  Examples include free educational materials for patients who are just learning about their cancer, reduced-price nutritional supplementation and sessions with a cancer nutritionist for patients who have trouble eating normally during cancer treatment, and helps purchase some of the more than 1,500 head coverings we have provided to patients who are losing their hair as a result of cancer treatment.  We are able to provide support to patients and families that wouldn’t be possible without private donations.”

The “‘Corona Cares” program was initiated in 2005 by Crown Imports and local wholesalers to benefit sick kids and their families at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago.  It has since spread to additional markets and benefits other charities.  Crown Imports, Corona’s exclusive U.S. importer provides all of the necessary program tools to wholesalers including, “Corona Cares” paper limes that are sold in retail accounts, customized pennant strings, and graphics for creating banners and posters.  At the N.C. Cancer Hospital, funds will support programs that benefit patients and families receiving cancer treatment.

The North Carolina “Corona Cares” program, now in its second year, will run through the month of August across the state.  Crown Imports and all of the wholesalers across the state have committed 25 cents of every case of Corona Extra and Corona Light sold in August to the N.C. Cancer Hospital, which treats patients from all 100 North Carolina counties.

”As longtime supporters of UNC Lineberger and the N.C. Cancer Hospital, the Long Beverage family is really excited to be able to partner with ‘Corona Cares’ for the second year in a row,” said Rodney Long, principle at Long Beverage, Inc.  “We have seen firsthand that this support makes a difference to people at a very difficult time in their lives.”

About the N.C. Cancer Hospital

The N.C. Cancer Hospital is the flagship site for UNC Cancer Care and the clinical home of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, where we are exerting an unprecedented effort to make strides against cancer and the suffering it causes is fueled by collaboration across the population, basic and clinical sciences.  The N.C. Cancer Hospital and UNC Cancer Care are part of UNC Health Care.

The state’s only public cancer hospital, the construction of the 315,000 square foot facility was paid for through an $180 million authorization of funds from the N.C. General Assembly. The hospital, which was dedicated in September 2009, tripled the previous patient care space and significantly increased the number of patients served.
