CHAPEL HILL, NC – The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center has been selected by Endurance Magazine as their primary charity partner for the Wachovia Tar Heel 10 Miler, Chapel Hill’s largest running event. A record breaking 4000 runners are expected to take to the streets of Chapel Hill on Saturday, April 9 in support of UNC Lineberger.

UNC Lineberger is the only public comprehensive cancer center for the state and the people of North Carolina. Their mission is to reduce cancer occurrence and death through research, treatment, training and outreach.

Steve Lackey, producer of the Wachovia Tar Heel 10 Miler and founder of Endurance Magazine says, “We think UNC Lineberger is a great fit for our event because so many of our runners identify with the University and have been touched by cancer in some way. We feel honored to be able to support this incredible resource.”

“It is an honor to be chosen as a charity partner by an organization like Endurance Magazine, which shares our commitment to making North Carolina a healthier place to live,” said Shelley Earp, MD, UNC Lineberger’s Director.

Endurance Magazine is also pleased to continue their relationship with The Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA’s We Build People Campaign. “At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day, we work side-by-side with great partners to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive,” said Greg Lee, Marketing Director of the Chapel Hill YMCA, “thanks to Endurance Magazine and the Wachovia Tar Heel 10 Miler, we’re able to continue to reach more people and touch more lives through our We Build People Campaign.”

The course has been redesigned and improved for 2011. Featuring the best of Chapel Hill, runners will start on the UNC campus, head through downtown Chapel Hill and then weave their way through historic neighborhoods before finishing in UNC’s Kenan Football Stadium.

Chapel Hill’s landmark running event also includes the Fleet Feet Sports 4+ Mile Run that runs concurrently with the 10 Miler for those who prefer a shorter distance. Both races take place on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 7:30 am.
