Marie and supporters gathered on Saturday, April 26 at Prince William National Forest Park in Dumfries, Virginia. The group of family, friends, co-workers and neighbors hiked 15 miles through the 200-year old park, joined in spirit by friends who walked in their neighborhoods to support Marie’s cause. To raise funds, Marie set up an online fundraising page, sold bracelets (colored yellow for bone cancer awareness), t-shirts and sponsorships for mile markers along the trail. She set a fundraising goal of $3,000. By the end of the hike, that goal was shattered – Marie’s first annual Hike For a Cure brought in $5,700!
Proceeds from the hike were planned to benefit bone cancer research in honor of Marie’s brother, who passed away from the disease at age 54. “Words cannot express how much I appreciate everyone believing in me and making this event come to life,” says Marie. “I hope to see all of you again next year for another exciting hike to show cancer who is boss!”
