The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center announces The Marci Kramish Campbell Dissertation Award, a competitive $5,000 award to recognize excellence in dissertation research focused on cancer and the population sciences. This cash award goes directly to the recipient and can be used for any purpose.

Marci Campbell

This award honors Dr. Marci Kramish Campbell, a leader in cancer prevention and control, disparities, and survivorship research at UNC-Chapel Hill and across the nation. Marci died much too soon from colon cancer in December 2011. She was an exceptional mentor and believed producing the next generation of researchers was one of our most important aims.

Graduate students in any of the population disciplines (epidemiology, nutrition, behavioral sciences, health services and outcomes research, psychology, etc.) are encouraged to apply. Candidates should be in their final year with a dissertation defense that will occur in the 2014-15 academic year (i.e., between June 2014 and May 2015). The faculty sponsor must be a Cancer Center member.

Previous award winners include Carmina G. Valle, MPH, in 2011 and Shellie Ellis, MA, and Shelley Golden, PhD, in 2012.

The application package must include: a curriculum vitae; a one- to two-page, (single-spaced) research description; and at least two letters of support: one from the Center member faculty sponsor and at least one from another academic reference. One of the two references should be the chair of the student’s dissertation committee and that letter should state that the student will defend his/her thesis in the appropriate time frame.

The application should be submitted as a single PDF. A copy of the application form is available at this link as a PDF.

Selection will be based on academic record, quality of the research, and supporting letters. The deadline for application is 5:00 pm on Friday, March 28, 2014. Email the application to Sara Vandegrift (sara.vandegrift@unc.edu). Please also mail or deliver a hard copy of the application to: Sara Vandegrift, Administrative Support Specialist, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, CB# 7294, 1700 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7294. A mid-May award date is anticipated.
