Martin Baucom has been appointed as senior executive director of development and communications at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, effective May 18, 2015.

In his new role at UNC Lineberger, Baucom will lead the organization’s efforts to secure philanthropic support and expand awareness of the center to further the work of scientists and physicians who are revolutionizing cancer research and lifesaving care for the people of North Carolina. As someone who has a passion for building relationships, Baucom will work to connect with existing and prospective donors, to share with them the exceptional level of cancer care and leading research taking place at UNC, and to advance the cancer center’s mission by partnering with a talented team of development and communications professionals to raise funds for UNC Lineberger.

“We are thrilled to welcome Martin Baucom as the newest member of our senior leadership,” said Ned Sharpless, MD, director of UNC Lineberger. “UNC Lineberger is moving into a tremendous time of growth, and we’re making major investments in facilities and cancer research. Martin’s professional experiences and extensive fundraising background will be valuable in helping us maintain our momentum and in securing much-needed financial support for our ongoing work.”

Baucom earned his undergraduate degree in American Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining the cancer center, he served as the associate executive director of development for the N.C. State College of Engineering. In this role, Baucom directed the College’s major and principal gift fundraising program and was responsible for campaign planning for the College of Engineering, including working with College leadership to align resources with fundraising priorities. He led and mentored a team of major gift officers, devising cultivation and solicitation strategies for top prospects and setting team and individual goals.

“As a native North Carolinian and UNC alum, I’m extremely happy to lead the fundraising and communications efforts of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center,” said Baucom. “UNC Lineberger is a unique place where some of the most exceptional physicians and scientists in the country work together to investigate and improve the prevention, early detection and treatment of cancers, and it’s truly an honor to play a role in their success.”
