In this role, Damania will help facilitate the research enterprise within the School of Medicine by strengthening the infrastructure, communication and development required to build and foster research within the School. She will work closely with many different units throughout UNC-Chapel Hill to make improvements to the infrastructure supporting medical research at the University. Damania will be a member of the School of Medicine’s Office of Research (OoR) and will report to Terry Magnuson, PhD, Vice Dean for Research at the School of Medicine and Sarah Graham Kenan Professor of Genetics.

“I am thrilled to be a part of helping set the research priorities at UNC to enhance collaboration and foster scientific progress in basic and translational research,” said Damania. “Our goal at OoR is to make UNC one of the very top research universities in the country.”

At UNC since 2000, Damania is a professor of microbiology and immunology and a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, with research focusing on viral cancers and immunity. She is also the co-leader of both the UNC Lineberger Global Oncology Program and the UNC Lineberger Virology Program.

“Blossom brings a wealth of knowledge on securing research grants, experience in collaboration across departments and a strong vision for the future of research at UNC,” said Magnuson.
