The Tuesday after Thanksgiving is intended to create a national movement around the holidays dedicated to giving.

UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is once again taking part in #GivingTuesday, a yearly effort to harness the collective power of a unique blend of partners—charities, families, businesses and individuals—to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.

Taking place December 2, 2014—the Tuesday after Thanksgiving—#GivingTuesday coincides with the kickoff of the holiday shopping season and will harness the power of social media to create a national movement around the holidays dedicated to giving.

An official partner of the #GivingTuesday movement, UNC Lineberger relies on the private support of more than 6,560 donors to advance cancer research, care, education and prevention in North Carolina and beyond.

Seeing an opportunity to channel the generous spirit of the holiday season to inspire action around charitable giving, a group of friends and partners, led by the 92nd Street Y, came together to find ways to promote and celebrate the great tradition of American giving. #GivingTuesday has brought together thought leaders in the non-profit sector to discuss innovative ways that people are approaching giving during challenging economic times, along with how Americans can give smarter and use new media to encourage positive change in their communities.

Currently, more than 7,250 corporate and non-profit organizations have committed to participate in the initiative. For more details about #GivingTuesday, visit www.givingtuesday.org. For more information about ways to give back to UNC Lineberger, visit unclineberger.org/giving.
