National Nurses Week is celebrated every year May 6-12 to coincide with the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. In recognition of its wonderfully caring and talented nurses, UNC Lineberger highlighted three of its nurses on social media

Jennifer Myers, RN, BSN, Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, spent nine years working as a writer and editor before becoming a nurse.

"It wasn’t something I had really ever considered before, but after having personal experience in the health care system and seeing nurses at work, I realized they are the front-line defenders. They are the beacon of hope, they are the trusted people who patients and families come to when they have questions or when they’re afraid. They’re always there. It’s what drove me to go back to school to become a nurse," says Myers.

Daniel Keller, RN, BSN, 4 Oncology Inpatient Unit, is preparing to retire after 30 years at UNC and reflected on how much cancer care has changed throughout his career.

"Patients used to come in for treatment and the treatments made them nauseated right away. Now new drugs have changed the side effects of chemotherapy. It’s an amazing feeling to see how far we've come," says Keller.

Megan Ubik, RN, BSN, OCN, Adult Outpatient Infusion Center, spoke about the special connection she has with her patients.

“I love my patients and I love getting to know their families. I take them through different parts of their lives, not just through cancer, but everything, good and bad, that goes on in their lives," says Ubik.

UNC Lineberger and N.C. Cancer Hospital salute all of its nurses for their dedication and the high quality, compassionate care they provide our patients and their families.
