Hyman B. Muss, MD

Hyman B. Muss, MD, director of the Geriatric Oncology Program at the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, was selected to receive the 2013 The Richard L. Schilsky Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) Achievement Award by the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology (ACTO) Foundation.

The award, which includes $5,000 in direct research support, recognizes years of service to the CALGB cooperative group by Dr. Muss, who has been a member for more than 30 years. As part of his work for the group, he has served as co-chair of CALB’s Cancer in the Elderly Working Group.

Dr. Muss is a translational researcher who is involved in the design and of both clinical trials that contain collaborative trials involving both laboratory and health services research. His major interest is in cancer in older patients with a focus on the treatment of breast cancer in older women.

The ACTO Foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt group that helps the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology answer important treatment questions through large-scale clinical trials. The Richard L. Schilsky award acknowledges the significant contributions of an individual to cooperative group research.
