News 14 - North Carolina Children's Hospital's top-notch care fit for a queen

Valerie King is living the teenage dream, she's in the running for homecoming queen. While it's tough competition for the crown, it's nothing compared to the battle she's been fighting for the past year.

“Valerie came to us about a year ago this time last year. Ewing Sarcoma is a pretty rare tumor we deal with in childhood,” said Dr. Stuart Gold, chief of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at North Carolina Children's Hospital.

After a year of surgery, chemo and radiation at North Carolina Children's Hospital, Valerie is cancer free.

“I'm doing really good now. I'm getting my energy back. I'm starting to fall back into things,” said Valerie.

While she doesn't look like the rest of the girls on her high school's homecoming court, she feels just as special.

“From day one I knew Valerie would be queen of something, she's a pretty impressive lady, she's a real go-getter,” said Gold.

Valerie has an an attitude, fit for a queen.
