The Oncology Nursing Excellence and Clinical Services Excellence Awards recognize four employees who exemplify the very best in cancer care at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“We are so proud of the compassionate, dedicated nurses and staff at UNC Lineberger. It is always difficult to select the recipients of these awards, but these four individuals have distinguished themselves in their commitment to deliver the highest quality of care to our patients,” said Lisa Carey, MD, medical director of the UNC Breast Center, division chief of hematology and oncology at the UNC School of Medicine, and physician-in-chief of the N.C. Cancer Hospital.

Mary Dunn, RN, MSN, OCN, NP-C, joined UNC Urology in 2010 as an adult nurse practitioner and has served as adjunct faculty for the UNC School of Nursing since 2011. She is also a UNC Lineberger member.

Dunn developed and currently coordinates a monthly Testicular Cancer Survivorship Clinic and is working to develop additional survivorship clinics for other genitourinary malignancies. She serves in leadership positions for numerous professional associations and is a founding member of the North Carolina Triangle Chapter of the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network.

Dunn is known to her colleagues and patients as a skilled and caring nurse practitioner. As one nominator wrote of Dunn, “She has excelled across the board in education, leadership, community involvement, clinical expertise, patients and family members rave about her exceptionally compassionate and personalized approach to patient care, interpersonal skills and mentoring.”

Lauren Terzo, BSN, RN, OCN, a lead clinical nurse in the Radiation Oncology Department, was nominated for her outstanding clinical expertise, mentoring and leadership, particularly in the area of clinical process improvement. She is widely respected as a teacher, role model and an advocate for patients and staff. Since joining Radiation Oncology in 2011, she has fostered collaboration both within the department and among other clinical teams. Terzo’s contributions are cited as instrumental in the Radiation Oncology Clinic repeatedly scoring among the top five UNC Health Care ambulatory clinics.

One of her nominators stated, “Lauren Terzo is a phenomenal example of a nurse that goes above and beyond to help improve systems for the radiation oncology patients and staff.”

Cynthia Moody has served as a financial counselor at the N.C. Cancer Hospital since 2012. She assists patients with all aspects of financial responsibility, insurance benefits and often transportation and housing arrangements too. She deftly coordinates with large health care teams and is known for providing warm, compassionate service to patients dealing with difficult financial situations.

Colleagues note Moody’s expertise and dedication in helping patients navigate any financial barriers to care. One nominator wrote, “I’ve never heard Cindy say, ‘That’s not my job.’ She is always willing to go above and beyond for patients and her coworkers.”

Christine Nadel is an administrative support supervisor at the N.C. Cancer Hospital where she serves as the template coordinator for the adult oncology clinics, the infusion center and UNC Health Care’s new Hillsborough Medical Office Building oncology clinics. She has been with UNC Health Care for over 13 years and has consistently demonstrated a passion and dedication to ensuring the highest standard of patient care. She is highly regarded as a committed team member, mentor and teacher.

According to one of her nominators, “Chris is not afraid to get her hands dirty and will always, without hesitation, lend a hand wherever needed.”
