The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) held their Light The Night Walk at Rock Quarry Park in Durham on Saturday, September 20. The evening fundraising walk celebrated and commemorated lives touched by blood cancer. More than a walk, the evening had a carnival atmosphere and included refreshments, entertainment, music and kids’ activities

The UNC Oncology Light The Night Walk team was among the top ten fundraising teams for the event. Team UNC Oncology, 48 members strong this year, was led by Crista Creedle, RN, OCN, nurse manager of the inpatient Hematology/Oncology unit in the N.C. Cancer Hospital. “Team UNC Oncology had a great turn out and far surpassed our fundraising goal,” said Creedle. “Our goal was $3,000, and we exceeded that by a wide margin bringing in $4,851!”

Light The Night Walk is a fundraising campaign that brings together families and communities to honor blood cancer survivors, as well as those lost to the diseases, and shine a light on the importance of finding cures and providing access to treatments for blood cancer patients.

Friends, families and co-workers form fundraising teams, and millions of consumers help by donating at retail outlets. These efforts culminate in inspirational, memorable evening walks in nearly two hundred communities each fall across North America.

The funds raised by Team UNC Oncology and other Light The Night participants will help advance more breakthrough therapies for blood cancer patients. Most recently, thanks to campaigns like Light The Night, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the LLS funded drug ibrutinib for the treatment of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
