The award is highly competitive and is given to applicants with the best scored abstracts. It recognizes outstanding young investigators for their meritorious work in triple negative breast cancer research.

The honor came with a monetary award from the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation to support travel to the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting 2016 in New Orleans.

Van Swearingen was first author of a study that explored a potential new combination treatment for triple negative breast cancer once it’s spread to the brain.
