UNC Lineberger’s Matthew E. Nielsen, MD, MS, was a co-author of an editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The opinion piece, “Simplifying Treatment and Reducing Recurrence for Patients with Early-Stage Bladder Cancer,” evaluated results of a randomized clinical trial testing gemcitabine after resection to prevent recurrence in bladder cancer patients.

The authors report that a treatment that is more tolerable and places less of a financial burden on patients is needed, and the trial reduced recurrence and has “potentially practice-changing implications.”

Nielsen is the co-director of urologic oncology at UNC Lineberger, an associate professor at the UNC School of Medicine and an assistant professor at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.
