What to Expect

We are here for you and want you to be as comfortable as possible as you begin your care with us.

What to Bring

Patients should bring their patient identification card if they have been seen before at UNC and their insurance card and any other related forms required by their insurance company. Patients who have not been seen at UNC before should first obtain a UNC Medical Record number by calling (919) 966-1234, M-F, 8:30am - 5:00pm, or toll free:1-866-595-3175.

The First Visit

Patients are scheduled for one hour consultations.

During their first visit, the patients will meet with a medical geneticist and/or a genetics counselor. Patients should be prepared to talk about the medical history of their family. We will need information regarding family members who currently have cancer or who have had cancer in the past. It is important for us to know the age at which individuals were diagnosed with cancer, the type of cancer, and the ethnic background.

After the initial evaluation, some cases are deemed not to be at particularly high risk. Even so, we encourage these patients to contact us annually. The field of cancer genetics is rapidly expanding and advancing. We keep in contact with the patients we counsel so that we can inform them about any new tests or interventions that might have an impact on them.

All sessions with cancer genetics clinical personnel are confidential. Every effort is made to protect the privacy of patient information.
