In honor of the late Zeny Datiles, an oncology community garden was built by the Comprehensive Cancer Support team’s 2 Registered Dietitians, Meredith Moyers and Jennifer Spring, as a tool to promote the plant-based diet and cancer-fighting foods. Zeny’s Garden is located at the SECU Family House in Chapel Hill and was created in memory of Zeny Datiles, a UNC dietitian who passed away of breast cancer. In keeping Zeny’s spirit alive, the garden was planted to teach and inspire cancer patients and their caregivers to follow a plant-based diet as recommended by the American Institute of Cancer Research. Under the guidance of Meredith and Jennifer, patients, caregivers, and Family House guests are encouraged to take fresh fruits and vegetables growing in the garden home for cooking and eating. Our hope is that Zeny’s Garden will inspire people to eat more fruits and vegetables, learn how to cook healthier, stay active, and improve their physical and mental health throughout treatment all while promoting a cancer free lifestyle. Also, anyone is welcome to volunteer in the garden by weeding, pruning, harvesting, and watering it. Please call 984-974-8232 for more information on how you can join in the gardening fun.
