Clinical profile

Area of interest

As the Director of the Dermatopathology service and Co-Director of the Immunofluorescence service at UNC, I see a daily collection of challenging skin specimens from the UNC Dermatology clinic, UNC Hospital inpatient service, and community dermatologists. We also service the UNC Surgical Oncology group by reading the melanoma biopsies, melanoma re-excisions, melanoma lymph node dissections, and outside dermatopathology slide consultations. Other challenging skin cancers suck as Merkel cell carcinomas, skin adnexal tumors, and complex cutaneous lymphomas and leukemias, are also referred to me for review. All of this work aids in the teaching and research mission. To that end, I am involved with many translational studies in an attempt to better characterize challenging clinicopathologic entities.

I am an active participant in the UNC Melanoma group and staff the UNC Multidisciplinary Melanoma conference as well as numerous other clinicopathologic conferences such as the UNC Dermatology
Hideaway conference and UNC-Duke Conference. I have given many lectures at regional and national conferences and recently gave talks at the NC Dermatology Association meeting and the UNC Melanoma Symposium. I am a reviewer for many dermatology and dermatopathology journals and serve on the editorial board of the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology.
