Area of interest

My research interests are focused on immunotherapeutic strategies to treat surgically resectable and unresectable pancreatic cancer. I have successfully transferred a funded NCI protocol from the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa utilizing a novel method of combining apoptosis induction with a dendritic cell based vaccine. This protocol has accrued half of the requisite 35 patients and is now open in Greenville. Biologic correlates examining the immune response, both local (immune cell infiltrate) and systemic (T cell recognition of candidate universally expressed pancreatic cancer antigens) , to this strategy will form the basis of a subsequent R-01 submission. This follow up study will explore various strategies designed to improve immune cell recognition of pancreatic tumors by identifying candidate antigens to pulse DC. For the current trial, we are continuing to utilize the cell therapies facility at Moffitt for DC preparation; my intention is to collaborate with the immunotherapy / cell therapy core at Lineberger for subsequent studies.
