Area of interest
Development of nanotechnology-enabled next generation irradiation and imaging technologies at cellular, tissue, small animal, and human level to advance clinical cancer treatment and basic cancer research. Development of new radiotherapy delivery and treatment planning approaches for high quality and cost effective radiotherapy treatment. The current areas of research include:
a) Development of the worlds first compact Microbeam Radiation Therapy (MRT) system based on carbon nanotube (CNT) multi-beam field emission x-ray (MBFEX) technology.
b) Development of novel cell irradiation system to study MRT mechanism. This research is in collaboration with Prof. Nancy Allbritton of Chemistry and BME, Prof. Adrienne Cox of Radiation Oncology and Pharmacology, and Prof. Zhou of Physics & Astronomy.
c) Development of image-guided small animal irradiator using MBFEX technology. This is work is in collaboration with Prof. Zhou.
d) Nanotube stationary tomosynthesis (NST) image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT): clinical test and software development. This work is in collaboration with Prof. Stephen Pizer of Computer Science, Prof. David Lalush of BME, and Prof. Larry Marks of Radiation Oncology.
e) Development of in-house radiotherapy treatment planning system Plan-UNC (PLUNC). PLUNC is a clinical and research software developed in-house at UNC. PLUNC has played a crucial role in routine patient treatment planning and research in the department of Radiation Oncology for more than twenty years. Software development is an ongoing process while we design and implement new algorithms and functions for clinical and research needs.
