St. Baldrick’s Event: Head Shaving and Fundraising
The St. Baldrick’s event held on Saturday, May 29, at the Crunkleton Bar in Chapel Hill raised $12,000 for the Foundation. The Foundation has given almost $200,000 to UNC Pediatric Oncology to fund an interpreter, a fellowship and other services for pediatric patients.
Several UNC physicians, administrators, patients, parents and friends had their heads shaved to the cheers and encouragement of a large crowd. Music by Tom Maxwell, father of patient Esten Maxwell, followed the hair elimination event.
Dr. Stuart Gold, chief of the division of pediatric hematology and oncology and program leader for UNC Lineberger’s pediatric oncology program, worked with the St. Baldrick Foundation to organize the event.

Michael and Rebecca Thacker de-haired for the cause. Their daughter, a twin, has a rare type of cancer and is being treated at UNC by Dr. Gold. Michael was brought back to the US from his service in Iraq to help care for his daughters. |

UNC Health Care Associate Vice President for Oncology Ian Buchanan and Administrative Director of Oncology John Rockwell both lost their locks, but not before a Mohawk moment for John. |
