Friendly contest inspires employees to collect comfort items for patients and families
When Denis and Margaret de St. Aubin, who serve on the UNC Lineberger Board of Visitors, received a letter requesting donations of essential items for the UNC Comprehensive Cancer Support Program’s Patient and Family Resource Center, Margaret proposed that Denis hold a contest among his employees to help fulfill the need.

With that, the Old North State Trust, LLC Holiday Charitable Giving Contest was born. Denis divided Old North State Trust employees into two teams affiliated with the company’s largest offices, those in Greensboro and Wilmington. Captains were selected and employees were given two weeks - from December 1 – 15, 2011 - to accumulate as many fleece blankets, hats, scarfs, and gloves as possible. Members of the winning team were offered an extra day of vacation as a reward for their efforts.
While the team associated with the Wilmington office won the contest, the Patient and Family Resource Center was the real victor – over 75 items were donated!
