As part of UNC’s Connected Learning Program Icon indicating that a link will open an external site., a group of students in Cobb Dorm established a chapter of Swing for Life Icon indicating that a link will open an external site. at UNC-Chapel Hill. The chapter held two fundraisers this academic year, a swing dance and a whiffle ball hit-a-thon, raising over $1,000 for UNC Lineberger.

UNC's Swing for Life chapter aims both to contribute funds to UNC Lineberger and educate students about ongoing cancer research. The group hopes to continue fundraisers next year with hit-a-thons and “Pink Day” fundraising at UNC Athletic games.

Swing for Life is a non-profit that was started in a Utah high school after the school’s softball coach Kathy Howa was diagnosed with breast cancer. Kathy started the non-profit with a vision to use sports to mobilize the community to “strike out” cancer, with all funds going specifically to cancer research. Since 2002, the organization has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars, involving over 100 high schools and 20 colleges across the nation, and even the Utah Jazz Basketball Team.
