Fans were invited to join in the fight against women’s cancers by purchasing special “Field of Hope” tickets for $12.99, with $5 of each ticket sold benefiting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

The local fundraising effort was in memory of former North Carolina State University women’s basketball head coach, Kay Yow, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and battled the disease until 2009. In December 2007, Yow founded the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, an organization committed to finding a cure in the fight against women’s cancers. Today, the Fund raises money for scientific research and assists the underserved community.

Dr. Hy Muss, director of UNC Lineberger’s Geriatric Oncology program was honored with the game ball during a presentation on the infield. This spring, Dr. Muss and his team were awarded a $1 million grant from the Kay Yow Cancer Fund for research to evaluate the impact of physical activity among older breast cancer survivors.

Cancer survivors were recognized and celebrated during the game between the Durham Bulls and the Gwinnett Braves. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund hosted a raffle with giveaways throughout the event, and Rex’s Mobile Mammography Unit was also there.
