Raising a Racket for a Reason

Charlotte Hunt, a 15-year-old rising sophomore at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia, organized her third Serve for the Cure tennis tournament in August of this year, raising $4,500 to benefit UNC Lineberger.

Even though the arrival of Hurricane Irene caused for cancellation of the tournament, Hunt proved that nobody can rain on her parade, or tournament. She was successful in spite of the weather!

“Two of my grandparents, my father and mother have been diagnosed and treated for cancer. I have played tennis all of my life so I decided to organize these tournaments in order to raise awareness and money for cancer research,” said Hunt.

The honorary chairman of this year's event was UNC alumnus Danny Talbott, who is originally from Rocky Mount and recently finished treatment for cancer. He played several sports during high school and was on UNC's football and baseball teams.  He also played a season of minor league baseball  and was with the Washington Redskins for three years.
