UNC Lineberger and the N.C. Cancer Hospital offer a multidisciplinary urologic oncology program with a broad range of expertise focused on the special challenges presented by bladder and GU cancers.

Our Team

UNC Cancer Care and UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center have assembled a team of recognized experts in bladder cancer care within a strong multidisciplinary urologic oncology program. Our team combines outstanding surgical skill with tremendous expertise in radiology, medical oncology and radiation oncology. Bladder cancer patients receive the benefit of our experience combined with one-stop consultative care and coordination with their local physician to create the best treatment plan possible.

Our Approach

The experience of one of the largest robotic and minimally-invasive surgical teams available allows our physicians to select the right surgical approach for each patient at the right time. Whenever possible, patients are offered the benefits of a minimally-invasive approach. As one site for a large outcomes trial comparing robotic and open surgery, UNC offers the confidence that comes with extensive surgical experience. Patients are offered a range of urinary diversion options to preserve quality of life.

Our center of excellence is distinguished by the presence of multiple medical oncologists with a specific interest and experience in bladder cancer, as well as their own focused basic and clinical research programs. In addition to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, we are continually working to improve care through cancer genetics-based approaches to treatment, the introduction of novel therapies and innovative clinical trials.

With expertise in bladder-sparing treatment protocols using chemotherapy and radiation therapy, we can offer many patients options that preserve quality of life without negatively impacting outcomes or limiting future decisions in the event of recurrence.

As with many complex conditions, research has consistently demonstrated that bladder cancer patients treated at high-volume centers have more favorable outcomes. The growth in our volume over the past several years reflects referring physicians’ and patients’ appreciation of the value of our multidisciplinary approach, and our patient satisfaction scores are among the top in the nation. In addition, we offer leading edge clinical trials and comprehensive patient and family support services, including links to national organizations supporting bladder cancer patients and their family members.
