Most cancer patients jump up and down after finishing therapy, but Richard Westin did much more. He jumped out of an airplane on a skydive to celebrate completing his chemo and radiation therapies and now jumps into water taking scuba diving lessons.

Daniel Fischler remembers the call. “When a doctor calls you at 10:30 on a Friday night, it’s not going to be good news.” He had undergone an MRI for a herniated disc, but when the test revealed a shadow on his left bowel, a CT was ordered. Then came the call from his doctor. “He told me that it was very likely a tumor. I was knocked out, shocked by the bad news.”

Stella Waugh, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2011, was thankful to have family together for her first Thanksgiving as a survivor. She said their big family on Thanksgiving day, which brings together nine grandchildren, ex-spouses who are now friends, and all of their children, is real. It’s the American family. When former school nurse Carol Enarson of Chapel Hill learned she had melanoma, she was shocked. After all, as a school nurse at Forsyth Country Day School (FCDS) in Winston-Salem she had developed innovative sun safety programs for elementary school students. “It is best to teach sun safety early on and before they start thinking about tanning beds,” she says.

Nathan Ladd thought he had sprained a groin muscle during his work with the Currituck Golf Club in Corolla, NC in May of 2006. Ice and Ibuprofen didn’t relieve the pain, and the 28-year-old noticed that his testicle was swollen and hard, so he went to a doctor.
