Meet Laurie Betts, a passionate esophageal cancer survivor who serves as a patient advocate at our cancer center. Laurie joined UNC Lineberger’s Patient Advocates for Research Council in 2020. She uses her scientific background as a molecular biologist to build a bridge between patients and researchers. Laurie is enjoys being involved in the development of patient facing materials, such as educational brochures, and the review of consent forms for clinical trials.

Laurie finds great meaning in patient advocacy. “By being a patient advocate for research at UNC Lineberger, I can help all cancer patients have a voice in how new cancer treatments and clinical trials are developed,” she says.

She had the fortunate opportunity to participate for 3 years in the American Association for Cancer Research’s Scientist – Survivor Program, which is designed to nurture partnerships among leaders of the scientific, cancer survivor and patient advocacy communities.

When Laurie is not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Dan, and their adopted greyhounds, Allie and Forego. You can also find her with her beloved horses. We are thankful for your many contributions, Laurie!
