Shortly after moving to North Carolina, Laura Jensen and her husband, Jack Hyer, became deeply interested in the cancer research initiatives at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. What began as a shared curiosity soon grew into a meaningful commitment. Both joined the Board of Visitors, eager to support the innovative work taking place at UNC Lineberger. Jack was later invited to join a newly formed group of Research Patient Advocates, a role that aligned beautifully with his generous spirit and belief in advancing scientific discovery.
Following Jack’s passing in 2017, Laura felt a strong desire to continue the work that had inspired them both. She reached out to Patty Spears to ask whether she could volunteer with the Patient Research Advocacy Council, stepping forward to honor the passion she and Jack had shared for patient‑centered research.
As a former breast cancer patient, Laura already felt a profound personal connection to the cause. Immersing herself in the world of research advocacy only strengthened that bond. The rapid evolution of breast cancer research captured her dedication. Today, she serves as a Breast SPORE advocate and remains an active member of both the Patient Advocates for Research Council and the Patients and Researchers Together workgroup. She has also contributed her insights to grant reviews, helping ensure that patient perspectives remain central to research decisions.
Laura combines her professional background in human resources, volunteer development, and nonprofit leadership with her experience as a published creative nonfiction writer. She uses her literary skills to craft patient‑focused materials that inform, empower, and support individuals navigating their own cancer journeys. Through her advocacy, she continues to honor Jack’s legacy while helping shape a future where every patient’s voice matters.
