Area of interest

Since joining the UNC faculty in 2009, I have established a research program with the central theme of applying technological advances in physical sciences and engineering to oncology. Our research has two main directions. First, we are interested in applying innovations in nanotechnology to improve cancer management. Our ongoing research topics range from preclinical development of novel therapeutics to early phase clinical trials. Our work has not only resulted in high profile publications but also led to patents and 2 startup companies.

Our other research direction aims to apply advances in biomedical engineering to develop three-dimensional (3D) ex vivo models of cancer metastasis. Metastatic cancer is the primary cause of morbidity and mortality in cancer patients. Thus, understanding the biology of cancer metastasis and predicting their response to treatment are critical to improving cancer care. We have developed several innovative models that have high potential to impact clinical management.
