Area of Interest

My research interests are in biomedical data science, in particular the application of AI and machine learning methods for predictive applications in health. My training is in engineering and computer science, and I have worked for over 30 years with data from a number of different modalities.

Over the past 12 years, I have worked on using AI methods with non-structured biomedical data such as images and waveforms. Working with colleagues and students in the Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Nursing and Pharmacy, I have worked on deep learning methods for cell counting in 3D microscopy images, cardiac rhythm estimation from EKG signals, early disease detection using echocardiography and EHR, and prediction of acute cardiac events.

I was part of team that won an award from ARPA-H to develop AI methods for early cancer identification from EHR, clincal notes and pathology/radiology/mammography images.
