Sivakumar Jaikumar joined UNC Healthcare in July 2005. After receiving his undergraduate degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, India, Jaikumar completed a Master’s in biomedical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Jaikumar completed his surgical internship at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and his neurosurgery training at Stanford Medical Center. During his training, he also completed a one-year fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. He obtained board certification through The American Board of Neurological Surgery in 2005.
Since arriving at UNC, Jaikumar has been an active member of the neurosurgical service. In addition to his general neurosurgery practice, his interests include trigeminal neuralgia, brain tumors (primary and metastatic), tumors of spine, sacral chordomas, stereotactic radiosurgery for brain tumors, minimally invasive spine surgery and complex spinal reconstruction. He works closely with Simon Khagi, MD in neuro-oncology, tailoring surgery and multimodal treatment for gliomas of brain.
Jaikumar is involved in collaborative work with area physicians to provide excellent neurosurgical care to the Triangle community. He has an expressed interest in teaching residents and has received the Neurosurgery Teacher of the Year award multiple times.
