Black Family Awareness Gathering

June 22, 2024 in Durham, NC

The CREATE Initiative, in partnership with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, hosted the Black Family Awareness Gathering on June 22, 2024, at the Community Family Life & Recreation Center at Lyon Park in Durham, NC.

The event featured speakers who shared valuable information on cancer risk, prevention, treatment options, and the importance of clinical trial participation. Attendees also had access to free breast and prostate cancer screenings.

The gathering welcomed 150 community members, with 20 exhibitors supporting our health and resource fair. A free lunch was provided, and a total of 26 individuals (13 men and 13 women) received cancer screenings.

Thank you to our partners, exhibitors, and community members for making this event a success!

This panel event discussed how cancer screening, genetic testing, and knowing your family’s history play a role in your health and wellness. We also discussed the impact of having candid family dialogues to better understand and confront cancer risks within Black families.

Download the Conversation Guide and Family Health History Tree to use at upcoming family gatherings as a practical tool to get the conversations flowing with loved ones.
