C-CNTP presents Tyrone Porter: An Unexpected Journey Through Academia as a URM

July 27, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

The Center for Nanotechnology in Drug Delivery and the Carolina Cancer Nanotechnology Training Program are pleased to welcome Tyrone Porter, PhD, professor of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin.

This event is open to faculty, postdocs, grad students, etc., and is offered in-person and virtually. The presentation will be followed by discussion.

Abstract

Academia can be challenging to navigate successfully as an underrepresented minority. As a Black male faculty member, I struggled through the years with a dual identity of an activist and a scholar. Recently I asked the question, “Can the separate identities coexist and will that make me a better faculty member, a better researcher, and a better role model?” In this talk, I will share my journey balancing both identities, the answer to the question, and plans for the future.

To attend virtually, please email Amy Fry at amy_fry@unc.edu for Zoom information.
