Second Annual Chromatin and Epigenetics Symposium

December 6, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm

The Second Annual Chromatin and Epigenetics Symposium will occur on on Dec. 6 in the Medical Biomolecular Research Building, room G-202. This year’s invited speaker is Xiaodong Chen, PhD. The event will also feature three trainee talks, a poster session, and reception.

Invited Speaker

Xiaodong Chen, PhD, professor of Molecular and Cellular Oncology, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center

Dr. Cheng began his education in Shanghai, China where he received a BSc in physics from Fudan University in 1982. He then moved to the United States, where he received a PhD in neutron diffraction from the Physics Department of SUNY at Story Brook in 1989. Dr. Cheng joined Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in 1990, first as a postdoctoral scientist (1990), and two years later started his own laboratory, progressing from staff investigator (1992) to senior staff investigator (1994). While at Cold Spring Harbor, Dr. Cheng began fruitful research collaboration with Dr. Richard J. Roberts (a 1993 Nobel laureate) that led to the discovery of DNA base flipping (1994). Dr. Cheng moved to Atlanta in 1997 as a Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar and Professor of Biochemistry at Emory University School of Medicine, and in 2017, he moved to MD Anderson Cancer Center. His current work primarily focuses on the generation, recognition, and erasure of epigenetic methyl marks on DNA and histones. In recognition of his “distinguished contributions to the field of epigenetics by elucidating structural insights and enzymatic mechanisms of DNA and histone modification enzymes”, Dr. Cheng was elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2012.

Jointly sponsored by the Carolina Chromatin Consortium, Cancer Epigenetics Training Program, IBGS, and UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
