UNC Lineberger member, UNC School of Medicine professor and basic scientist Keith Burridge has conducted seminal research on the basic building blocks of cells for four decades.
Keith Burridge, PhD, Kenan Distinguished Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology in the UNC School of Medicine and member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS), one of the country’s oldest learned societies and independent policy research centers.
“I’m deeply honored by this election,” said Burridge, also a member of the UNC McAllister Heart Institute. “But I take it as recognition of a body of work that was more than just mine. It included many talented students, postdoctoral fellows, and others who I have had the good fortune to work with over the years at UNC.”
Burridge, who came to UNC in 1981, joined 176 other academics named as fellows of the AAAS in 2016. His work on the basic mechanisms of cell biology and cellular movement has been at the forefront of the field and has led to a much deeper knowledge of how cells, especially cancer cells, do what they do, a feat that has led to the identification of new drug targets.
The UNC School of Medicine profiled Burridge in June 2015 and produced a Real Medicine video of his other love: playwriting.
