Lab Environment

A central mission of the Milner lab is to maintain a diverse, inclusive, safe, collaborative and supportive environment based on the appreciation that each lab member brings a unique set of life experiences and scientific expertise to the group. We also strive to ensure all of our findings are generated with scientific rigor and are highly reproducible.

Justin has participated in the Office of Graduate Education Faculty Mentor Training workshop which emphasizes the importance of aligning expectations, communication, fostering independence, and supporting professional development for all trainees and members of the lab.

The Milner lab is a designated Safe Zone for all individuals that identify as LGBTIQA+ within the campus community, and is a designated Green Zone to support student veterans.

Mentorship

My mentoring philosophy is primarily molded from my own experiences as I was fortunate to have excellent mentors during graduate school and during my postdoc. Key components of my mentorship style include flexibility and communication based on the understanding that each individual in the lab may have differing levels of experience and unique preferences/goals for training and discussion.

I have participated in the Office of Graduate Education Faculty Mentor Training workshop which emphasizes the importance of aligning expectations, communication, fostering independence, and supporting professional development for all trainees or members of the lab.
