Two members of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center have been elected as 2013 Fellows of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM), the honorific leadership group within the American Society for Microbiology (ASM).
The newly elected Fellows from UNC Lineberger are Myron S Cohen, PhD, J. Herbert Bate Distinguished Professor of Medicine in Microbiology and Immunology, and Epidemiology; Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases; and Director of the Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases, and Blossom Damania, PhD, of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Director of the UNC Lineberger Global Oncology Program.
Another member of the UNC faculty, Professor Peggy Cotter, PhD, of theof Microbiology and Immunology department, was also elected as a member.
Selection for fellowship is a highly competitive annual peer review process, based on scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced the field of microbiology. Cohen, Damania and Cotter join eight other current Microbiology & Immunology faculty members who are AAM Fellows: Ralph Baric, Jeffery Dangl, Peter Gilligan, William Goldman, Virginia Miller, Joseph Pagano, Nancy Raab-Traub and P. Frederick Sparling.
There are over 2,000 Fellows representing all subspecialties of microbiology, including basic and applied research, teaching, public health, industry, and government service. The new Fellows will be recognized at the Academy Fellows Luncheon and Meeting at the 113th ASM General Meeting in Denver, Colo. on May 21, 2013.
