Headshot of Wendy Brewster
Wendy Brewster, MD, PhD.

Today, we remember Wendy Brewster, MD, PhD, our beloved friend, mentor and colleague, on the day of her passing one year ago. Her life’s work was dedicated to her gynecologic oncology patients, focusing on creating better health outcomes for those at risk of ovarian, endometrial, and cervical cancers.

Wendy was a fierce advocate for identifying and eliminating health disparities, especially in the field of cancer care. Her commitment to her patients was not just about treating illness but about empowering individuals and communities with knowledge and support.

On this day, we honor her memory and celebrate the remarkable impact she had on so many lives. We remember how she fought for those whose voices were often unheard, and how she strived to bring about change in the field she loved so dearly.

“Wendy loved her patients and colleagues and was always willing to go the extra mile in any circumstance. However, she was most passionate about building systems that would ensure that every cancer patient regardless of background or resources could receive state-of-the-art cancer care and participate in the most innovative research programs.”

– Vickie Bae-Jump, MD, PhD, director, Gynecologic Oncology

In her honor, UNC Lineberger established the Wendy R. Brewster Distinguished Lectureship in Cancer Health Equity, a tribute to her legacy.

This lectureship is dedicated to advancing the field of excellence in cancer care for everyone and an end to cancer disparities – a continuation of the work she was so passionate about.

Each year, we will invite leading experts to share their knowledge and innovations, ensuring that Wendy’s mission to improve cancer care and address health disparities lives on. Announcements concerning this year’s inaugural event will be forthcoming.
