Most recently, she served as chair of the Membership and Nominating Committee. Prior to that, she ably served as vice chair from 2007-2009 and chaired the board from 2009-2012.

All along, Betty Ray has been a passionate and dedicated advocate for UNC Lineberger across the state of North Carolina. Director of UNC Cancer Care, Shelley Earp, MD, spoke of the gratitude shared by everyone at the cancer center when he presented Mrs. McCain with UNC Lineberger’s Outstanding Service Award on April 11th.

“We are forever grateful for her gracious and inspiring leadership which has motivated our board of visitors to an unprecedented level of philanthropic support and overall advocacy of our mission.”

Betty Ray has an outstanding record of service to the state of North Carolina including 14 years of service on the UNC Board of Governors, eight years as N.C. Secretary of Cultural Resources, chair of the N.C. Democratic Party, service on the N.C. Legislature Advisory Budget Commission and numerous other boards and community groups.

“Mrs. McCain is a member of a generation where many women were not encouraged and mentored to leadership,” says Dr. Earp. “It has been a great benefit to our state that she broke that mold, becoming one of North Carolina’s premier leaders. She is an inspiration to many – men and women alike.”
