Expertscape, an online database that assesses and ranks the expertise and contributions of physicians and medical institutions worldwide, rated 12 UNC Lineberger faculty members as top-rated experts in their fields for its 2021 rankings. Twelve other members of the UNC School of Medicine were also recognized.
The website, which ranks people and institutions by expertise in more than 29,000 biomedical topics, bases its assessments on scientific publications, reviewing medical journal articles from the National Institutes of Health’s PubMed journal database dating back to 2010. Each article is assigned a score based on a number of criteria, including the journal’s prominence and the type of article. Below are the UNC Lineberger faculty who ranked in the top 20 experts in their fields.
Ralph Baric, PhD, professor, Microbiology & Immunology and William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor, Department of Epidemiology, in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, has been recognized as the No. 4 expert in the world in SARS and the No. 3 expert in the U.S.
Lisa A. Carey, MD, FASCO, the Richardson and Marilyn Jacobs Preyer Distinguished Professor for Breast Cancer Research and deputy director of Clinical Sciences at UNC Lineberger, has been recognized as the No. 8 expert in breast cancer in the U.S. and the world.
Myron Cohen, MD, Yeargan-Bate Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Microbiology & Immunology, and Epidemiology, associate vice chancellor of Global Health and Medical Affairs, and director of the Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases, has been recognized as No. 4 in the world and the U.S. for HIV infections. He has also been recognized as the No. 2 expert in the world and the U.S. in HIV seropositivity and the No. 5 expert in the world and the U.S. in sexually transmitted diseases.
Blossom Damania, PhD, Boshamer Distinguished Professor, Microbiology & Immunology, and vice dean for Research, UNC School of Medicine, has been recognized as the No. 3 expert in the world and the U.S. in Kaposi sarcoma.
Dirk Dittmer, PhD, professor of Microbiology & Immunology, has been recognized as the No. 4 expert in the world and the U.S. in Kaposi sarcoma.
Joseph Eron, MD, Herman and Louise Smith Distinguished Professor of Medicine, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases, director of the UNC Center for AIDS Research’s clinical core, and associate director of the General Clinical Research Unit, has been recognized as the No. 9 expert in the world in HIV infections and No. 8 in the U.S. He has also been recognized as the No. 9 expert in sexually transmitted diseases in the world, and No. 8 in the U.S.
Nigel Mackman, PhD, John Parker Professor of Hematology, professor of Pathology, professor of Pharmacology, and member of the UNC Blood Research Center, has been recognized as the No. 6 expert in the world in thrombosis and No. 5 in the U.S.
Matthew Milowsky, MD, George Gabriel and Frances Gable Villere Distinguished Professor of Bladder and Genitourinary Cancer Research, section chief, Genitourinary Oncology and co-director, Urologic Oncology Program, has been recognized as the No. 15 expert in the world and the U.S. in bladder cancer.
Ben Philpot, PhD, Kenan Distinguished Professor of Cell Biology & Physiology and associate director of the UNC Neuroscience Center, has been recognized as the No. 1 expert in the world in Angelman syndrome.
