Four women at Get Real & Heel block partyUNC Lineberger’s Get Real & Heel hosted a block party for its current and former members on Saturday with the goal of building a stronger community. Many braved the sultry mid 90s temperature to enjoy a picnic, catch up on each other’s lives outside Get Real & Heel, introduce their loved ones to each other, and listen to music from the Haw River Crawdads and Friends.

“Community is such a huge part of what we do,” said Carly Bailey, physical activity and wellness coordinator at UNC Lineberger. “We wanted to give participants the opportunity to meet other people who are a part of the program outside of the time they are normally there.”

“Get Real & Heel is focused on strengthening a person’s physical and emotional wellbeing following treatment,” said Bailey. “In addition to working with our participants to develop personalized exercise routines to address treatment-related side effects, we also understand the importance of creating opportunities for the members to bond with one another in and outside the gym.”

Get Real & Heel, which is part of UNC Lineberger’s Comprehensive Cancer Support Program, is available to cancer survivors of all types with their doctor’s clearance.
